Everyone's heard of Resident Evil and Silent Hill but surprisingly few know how much of their design and atmosphere they owe to Alone in the Dark, a somewhat obscure series that started in 1992 by the visionary designer Frederick Raynal at French developer Infogrames. Tank controls, fixed camera angles, 2d backgrounds, you name it, this game had it all or most of the classic survival horror tropes.
